St Bathans Jail & Constables Cottage

Stay in a Central Otago Goldfields town

If you are looking for authentic Central Otago goldfields heritage, come to St. Bathans and stay in the former St Bathans Police Camp, established in 1864.

We offer holiday accommodation in two restored historic buildings – the Constable’s Cottage, built in 1884, and the former Jail. Otago Central Rail Trail riders can find us some 20 km off the Trail on Loop Road.

Constable's Cottage is a three bed-roomed house with a modern kitchen and bathroom, and an elegant, sunny verandah overlooking the Blue Lake. The cottage also has wifi, TV, bbq and a pleasant, sunny garden.

The St Bathans Jail is self-contained with a queen-sized bed, small kitchen and bathroom and is located on a terrace above the cottage. All linen supplied.

St Bathans - a Central Otago Goldfields town

St Bathans is an Otago Goldfields town, located en route between the ski-fields and vineyards of Central Otago and the wildlife and natural beauty of the Otago coastline.

The town dates to the early 1860s when gold was discovered - a canvas town with numerous hotels was quickly established and by 1864 the population numbered nearly 1000; today the town has six permanent residents. You can walk around the spectacular Blue Lake, formed by gold mining processes, now a Department of Conservation reserve, and see goldfields archaeology and the architecture of the town’s historic buildings, many of these are listed historic places (type 'St Bathans' into the address box). St Bathans is typical of many small Central Otago towns, sharing a history of the Otago goldfields.
