St. Bathans - History and Archaeology

This selection of photographs shows 19th century St. Bathans, typical of a Central Otago gold mining town. The archaeology of gold mining is evident in the Blue Lake itself, and the remains that can be seen from the Department of Conservation walking tracks. Main Street (today's Loop Road) still has historic buildings from this era of St Bathans' past. The Department of Conservation panels erected near the Blue Lake walkway explain this story.
